Did you know 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have developed some form of periodontal disease by 2 years of age?

Periodontal disease is a term used to describe infection and associated inflammation of the periodontium (the tissues surrounding the tooth). There are four tissues that make up the periodontium: the gingiva, the cementum (covering of the root surface), the periodontal ligament (the ligament attaching the tooth root to the bone) and the alveolar bone.

Periodontal disease is the most common disease to affect our pets and generally begins with gingivitis. If left untreated, the infection spreads deeper into the tooth socket destroying the bone causing recession of the gums, loss of teeth, and pain.

Is periodontal disease preventable?

The great news is periodontal disease is preventable and very manageable by you, the pet parent. Parents are encouraged to brush their pet’s teeth daily, provide appropriate chewing items, dental diets, and treats to maintain your pet’s oral health. Urban Veterinary Associates recommends a complete oral health assessment and treatment yearly. At your pet’s annual examination, the veterinarian will evaluate their oral health and can provide tips for a healthier and pain-free mouth. Your pet’s oral health is just as important as yours.
